JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin WIC Office leaders say funding for the fiscal year 2013 has been approved. The program provides free food, nutrition information, and breast feeding assistance to area women and their children.

Right now, the program assists about 3,600 people each month from Jasper County and surrounding areas. Program coordinator Joyce Doty says receiving this government funding is crucial to their operating budget as the program continues to grow.

"It just allows us to continue to provide services to them. It seems like we have a lot of new prenatal coming on. So, we are able to get them on the program, educate them about breast feeding, and provide them supplemental food," says Doty.

To participate in the WIC program, you must provide proof of identity and proof of residence in Missouri, and also meet certain income requirements. To find out if you qualify, you can contact the Joplin WIC Office located on east 4th Street.
