Next month, voters in Baxter Springs will head to the polls to decide the fate of a proposed $8 million bond to pay for new classrooms and storm shelters.

The bond would help pay for moving 7th and 8th grade classes to the high school, new kindergarten classrooms at Lincoln elementary, moving 6th grade classrooms to central elementary and construction of FEMA certified storm shelters at each building.

The shelters would also serve as additional classroom space.

If the bond is passed. projections show residents who own a $100,000 home paying an increase of about $100 in property taxes a year.

The bond question will be on the May 8 ballot.
