Twelve students meet every week after school with the goal of promoting a healthy environment for area teens and children.
They're concerned with the amount of cigarette butts found near playgrounds and picnic areas in Carthage parks.
The group took action by drafting a proposal to the city council.
They want permission to post signs in the parks discouraging smokers from throwing cigarette butts on the ground, especially in areas with a lot of children.
Students became aware of the problem during a recent park clean up which inspired this call for change.
Members of the student group say they think the proposal was well received but are still waiting on a decision.
Carthage mayor Mike Harris who says the proposal will go to the city's public services committee for further review.
