Local police are keeping a close eye on crash numbers as totals are up in the first quarter of 2012. In the month of March - the City of Webb City saw 30 crashes, compared to 18 in March of 2011. And the total is similar to numbers in February and March. City leaders point out Webb City's population has been growing - which is likely a factor. They add construction is in the works for the  intersection of Madison and Highway 171, where higher traffic counts may be prompting many of those wrecks.

WC City Administrator Carl Francis said that with capacity now full at City Pointe Plaza, "That backs traffic up to the intersection and we end up with rear end collisions. Which I'd be willing to bet that 80% of our accidents at that intersection are a result of rear end collisions."

Francis also points out that crash statistics are down overall as compared to an annual high of 372 back in 2005.
