JOPLIN, MO.--A new photo exhibit is helping people heal a year after the May 22nd tornado.

The "Dear World, From Joplin With Love" exhibit opened today at the Spiva Center for the Arts.

More than 50 photographs are on display of Joplin residents who survived the tornado.

Each person in the photo wrote inspiring messages on their bodies.

New Orleans photographer Robert Fogarty took the photos.

Art center employees say many residents who come by to view the exhibit find it very emotional...but rewarding.

Oliver Zerkel, staff member for Spiva Center for the Arts says,

"They have to kind of re-experience and bring out emotions they havent thought about in awhile, but at the year anniversary its a good time to reflect."

Joplin resident Shaun Steele says, "It's great..I just love not only the people from Joplin but also from surrounding communities and all over coming to see it so its nice to share the story with everyone."

Also at the exhibit is the shoebox project that shows 15 different displays of items Joplin residents found from their destroyed homes that gave them hope.

Each item has a written story attached.

The "Dear World, From Joplin With Love" exhibit will be open through July 13th.
