To help prepare for the anniversary of the Joplin tornado, Joplin public works director Dave Hertzberg says he knew several vacant lots would need to be mowed.
Hertzberg says the decision was made to use Joplin city jail inmates.
In the past, inmates had been used for projects like cleaning up Main street for Third Thursday.
After the success of this project, Hertzberg says inmates may be used for more projects in the future.
Only inmates convicted of non-violent crimes are eligible.
They receive credit towards their sentence for their work.
