NEWTON COUNTY, MO.--- Newton County officials warn residents of phone scam artists, claiming to represent the Circuit Clerk's Office. The con artists are calling residents claiming there is a warrant out for their arrest, because they failed to appear for jury duty. The scammers are then asking for the resident's social security number, and informing them they need to mail $500. Newton County Clerks say they only communicate with jurors through mail, never by phone. If you receive a phone call like this, officials suggest hanging up and calling the courthouse at 417-451-8267.
