JOPLIN, MO.--- School buses are required by law to undergo 2 inspections per year. 1 is done in the spring by the highway patrol and the other, within 60 days of the start of the school year. Inspectors check the engine, make sure the breaks are working, tires are full, and interior seats are in good condition. Joplin School Transportation Directors say upkeep has become especially important since the tornado.
"We're expecting more miles on our buses. Last year, we drove a little over 1 million miles, the previous year before the tornado, we drove about 750 thousand. We've go increased mileage which makes maintenance that much more important," states Dave Pettit, A. D. R-8 Transportation.
