PITTSBURG -- Crawford County Health Officer Janis Goedeke says this year 43 cases of tick-born diseases were investigated in Crawford county. That's nearly twice the number from 2011. While that doesn't necessarily mean each case turned out to be a tick-born disease, Goedeke says it s alarming, because a confirmed illness could have life-altering effects for the patient.

"The problem with these diseases is they can certainly have life-changing results," Goedeke says. "Lyme's disease can certainly be crippling."

Ticks can carry diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme's Disease. In all, 131 potential cases were investigated in southeast Kansas this past summer.
