JOPLIN, MO.--- At today's Jasper County Commission meeting, it was reported deputies spent more than $16, 600 of the more than 23,000 that was allocated as part of "Shop With A Deputy." The rest of the funds will be carried over to next year.

The money was used to buy 150 "one hundred dollar" Wal-Mart gift cards. 117 children participated in the program and the remaining gift cards went to buy gifts for needy children whose parents work at the sheriff's office. Deputies say money is raised year round to help as many kids as possible.

"I know there's some expectation that we're going to try to improve next year and broaden that category in our search for those needy kids to make sure everybody gets covered," says Darren McIntosh, Joplin Police Department.

Jasper County commissioners and the Fraternal Order of Police agreed in early December that the FOP would oversee and manage funds for the Jasper County Sheriff's Office benevolent Shop With A Deputy Program.
