PITTSBURG, KS.--- A collegiate licensing agency named PSU the 2012 "New Institution of the Year." The designation is based on merchandise sales which translates into logo recognition. PSU officials say they are the only higher education in the country with a gorilla mascot. University marketing officials say having a recognizable logo can help grow a university.

"Having a recognizable brand is so very important for Pittsburg State University, when you go out and you see that it helps us communicate and begin that conversation with perspective students, with Alumni, with everybody," says Chris Kelly, PSU Media Relations

PSU officials say their merchandise sales increased by more than 200% during the past academic year which likely contributed to receiving this award.
