MSSU National Issues Forum

JOPLIN, MO.--- "I mean, what could you do? Hide behind a tree and who knows where they are shooting from," says Wendy McGrane, Library Director, MSSU.
People from all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs exchanged viewpoints during the National Issues Forum at Missouri Southern State University today.
"We're looking different approaches to solving the problems associated with mass shootings," says Wendy McGrane.
A topic which is on the forefront of the national conversation in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, and the movie theater in Colorado. Participants discussed different ways to prevent these disasters like tougher gun control measures.
"It's just incredible hearing different people for gun laws, against gun laws, don't want guns banned, want guns banned," says Jonathan Aldridge, Sophomore.
"It's just unique to me to where I want to find out why they are only thinking that one way," says William York, Sophomore.
The group also discussed how violent video games and bullying in school could drive someone to shoot.
"People need to become more involved in what's going on in their life," says York.
Each spring the forums are held and a different topic is discussed. Organizers hope the different opinions from people at the forum, will help someone else be more informed.
"Awareness and education, so hat people who maybe haven't formed an opinion have an idea of what the different issues are," says McGrane.
The forums are held at the MSSU Spiva Library, and there are 4 more opportunities to join them. For more information, click here.
