PITTSBURG, KS --The SEK Humane Society is over capacity with 100 dogs and 65 cats in need of a permanent home.

Tom Steindler drove 180 miles from wichita to adopt Dion.

After walking the black Lab mix around the Southeast Kansas Humane Society he decided she's the one.

"Her demeanor is pretty good, her age and temperament for my mother. She needs an older dog," says Steindler.

Steindler signed on the dotted line minutes after meeting Dion. But he first fell for her when he was back at home in Wichita.

"We found this dog on the internet," says Steindler.

"We work with Petfinder.com and we have pictures up there and try to update it every week," says Karen Newport, SEK Humane Society Manager.

The SEK Humane Society keeps an online catalog of their pets. Workers say that makes it easier to unite animals with families all around the area.

And that's not all. Directors offer other services such as free spay and neuters, and some future owners can even get help paying the adoption fee itself.

"They call and possibly qualify for a voucher to get help paying for it," says Newport.

But the shelter also has needs, everything from more volunteers to very basic items.

"Cleaning supplies. We spend on average just a little over $100 a week," says Newport.

Those costs may be a little lower with steindler giving this tail wagger a permanent home.

"Obviously there's a need," says Steindler.

If you would like o adopt a pet visit the SEK Humane Society 2 1/4 miles West of 20th & 69 Bypass in Pittsburg.
