JOPLIN, MO. --- Darci Brown is the proud mother of five children and a big supporter of breast feeding.

"It's one of the best things you can do for your child and for yourself because there's so many benefits on both sides," Brown says.

She's one of many women who came to Landredth Park on Saturday to participate in the Big Latch On.

"It's something that we really believe in. I worked really hard to breast feed," says mother Lisa Miller.

At 10:30 a.m. these women began feeding their children.

"They've essentially tried to break the world record of the number of women breast feeding simultaneously each year."

The Big Latch On is a global organization devoted to the normalization and promotion of breast feeding.

Women in over 600 locations participated in the event to spread awareness.

"It's normal, it's perfectly healthy and it's the best way to insure the health and well being of your child," says Samantha Crain, organizer.

It also erases the negativity behind breast feeding.

"It's not something that is taboo and that you have to hide. It's natural and everybody should if you're a mom you should at least give it a try."

Over 7,000 women participated in the Big Latch On, breaking last year's record of nearly 5,700.
