COLUMBUS, KS.--- Instead of driving over grandmas house for a Thanksgiving meal, Lieutenant Shane Gibson of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is out patrolling the streets of Columbus, Kansas.

"It's just another day, It would be nice to be with family and stuff, but you need to have law enforcement and dispatchers out every single day," states Lieutenant Shane Gibson, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Gibson has worked most holidays for the past 7 years, and knows what to expect on days like this.

"Thanksgiving, it's pretty mild in the morning time and as the day goes on it gets a little more busy," states Lt. Gibson.

With Black Friday retail sales creeping further into Thursday night, Gibson is beginning to see a lot more on his Thanksgiving shift than just cows and trees.

"We patrol, take calls, there's an increased traffic flow so sometimes there's accidents," states Lt. Gibson.

In addition to handling matters on the road, deputies sometimes have to make house calls.

"On holiday, in the evening time we end up dealing with a lot of domestics. Arguments, people getting a little out of hand," states Lt. Gibson.

At the end of the day, Lieutenant Gibson says keeping the community safe takes priority.

"They're needed 24 hours per day, you have to have coverage because there are going to be calls. Just because it's a holiday doesn't mean that people aren't going to be doing stuff wrong." states Lt. Gibson.

The Cherokee County dispatchers usually receive about 230 calls each day. On holidays that average drops to around 45 calls.
