JOPLIN, MO.--- The Roe versus Wade ruling legalized first trimester abortions. Since the historic decision, everyone from politicians to interest groups have worked to reverse it.

Regional healthcare professionals say American's understanding of Roe versus Wade has changed over the past 40 years.

"Americans understand that labels don't work anymore like pro choice or pro life," said Paula Gianino, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood, Southwest Missouri Region. "These labels don't reflect the complexity of our lives or the issues that human beings struggle with."

While there have been no changes to the ruling over the past 40 years, in 2007 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal abortion ban that criminalizes partial birth abortions.
