Missouri University Tuition Increase

JOPLIN, MO.--- Public universities in Missouri, including Missouri Southern State University, are likely to increase their tuition fees. The increase in tuition is based on the consumer price index, or C.P.I.
The budget committee at MSSU suggested a tuition increase of 1.7 percent. Starting the fall semester of 2013, students will pay $173.20 per credit hour, an increase of $3.72.
The higher fees will add approximately $350,000 in revenue for the university. University officials say the extra money isn't enough to cover a drop in financial support from the state, or the increase in costs of providing educational programs.
"We have to be very careful in managing our budget. We have to be very careful in realizing that we can spend this, or we can't spend that, and where's there's a need to cut and we have to make some very hard decisions," says Dr. Bruce Speck, MSSU President.
"Building maintenance, deferred maintenance, and also there's structural needs that we have and capital improvements is not something that we've really been getting help from the state," says Rod Anderson, Budget Committee Chairman, MSSU.
MSSU's Board of Governor's will have the final say on whether to approve the tuition hike. They will make that decision at a meeting which will be held at 1 p.m. this Friday at the Billingsley Student Center.
