Pitt State and MSSU football win season openers

Pittsburg State opened their season on a high note with a 41-20 victory on the road over Northeastern State. In his first start, Gorilla redshirt sophomore quarterback Anthony Abenoja set a new school record with 378 passing yards and three touchdowns. Standout wide receiver John Brown was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes to go along with his team-high nine receptions and 140 yards through the air.

As for Missouri Southern State, the Lions began the Daryl Daye era with a win on the road at the University of Central Oklahoma. They topped the Broncos 25-20 in a game that came down to the final possession. After leading 25-7 in the fourth quarter, the Lions surrendered two scores to make a 25-20 game. MSSU then converted on fourth down to to seal the game. Kellen Cox led the Lions in rushing with 20 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown.

In high school action, Carthage's Seth Beckner continued to lead the Tiger offense with six touchdowns Thursday night. The senior running back has 10 touchdowns through just two games this season. They defeated Carl Junction 41-27 to improve to 2-0.

In the Kickoff Classic in Kansas, Southeast defeated Columbus 34-22 behind three Daniel Peak touchdown receptions.
