JOPLIN, MO.--- For Missouri Southern State University student Raymond Page, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than just a day off school or work.
"America. Not just America, but I think the world would be a lot different place had he not come along. I think this day is important to honor everything he did," states Raymond Page, MSSU Student.
Page attended several events on campus to honor Dr. King today.
"We started off breakfast this morning with almost 100 people who came out to celebrate and to hear Dr. Bernard Franklin bring a message. Then we transitioned to an 11 o'clock lecture where we had about 36 folks come," states Rikki Smith, Resource Development.
Dr. Franklin not only studies Dr. King's life and impact on society, but is also is a friend of the King family.
"My brother was his roommate all 4 years at Morehouse College," says Dr. Bernard Franklin, Speaker.
Getting to know the family of such an influential man helped Dr. Franklin deliver a very specific message.
"I want to inspire young people about Dr. King's dream and remind them to work hard, to be prepared when life calls you into your King moment," says Dr. Franklin.
A point Raymond Page is taking to heart.
"I thought it was very inspiring today. It makes me feel like I can do anything that I set my mind to," says Page.
Other Martin Luther King Jr. service day activities included painting "Stars Of Hope" for Hurricane Sandy victims, a volunteer rally, and a public digital art project. Each guest was given an engraved souvenir pendant to commemorate the day.
