NEVADA, MO.--- Steve Dean was on a flight to Africa for a hunting trip when he met Prasanna Kumar, a man who helps orphan girls in India.
"Him and his wife Dorothy had given up their home for little girls so they have a place to stay in Chennai," says Steve Dean, Homes of Hope.
The effort sparked the interest of Dean and his wife. Together they formed the non-profit organization "Rose Of Sharon Homes Of Hope" to work with Kumar.
"These little girls become orphaned so easy over there, so it pulled my heart out," says Dean.
Their goal is to raise half a million dollars to be able to help up to 80 girls.
"We want to buy land first. The land is going to cost $170,000 to buy 2 acres outside of the City of Chennai," says Dean.
Part of the money would be used to build a living center that would serve as a home and school.
"They have no value over there. If they don't have education and if they aren't in an area where they have a mom and a dad," says Dean.
So far, the organization has raised more than $72,000. The mission caught the attention of 12-year-old CJ Mitchell of Nevada.
"Now it's one of my dreams to go there to help the girls and help build the orphanage for them," states CJ Mitchell, 12-years-old.
He along with other kids from First Baptist Church in Nevada put on a garage sale that raised more than $2,000.
"It shows that I really need to help the girls in India and it shows they need a home," says Mitchell.
First Baptist Church and First Christian Church are anchors behind the project.
"It's helps us think outside of just what we do at the church with mission," says Mitchell.
A mission to help girls left without parents, girls that have touched the heart of Dean.
"That little girl, she pulled my heart out, just pulled my heart out. I wanted to put her in my suitcase," says Dean.
