PITTSBURG -- Germaine Race rushed 11 times for a career-high 186 yards and three touchdowns, sparking the Pittsburg State University offense to a 713-yard game as the third-ranked Gorillas rolled to a 70-14 Homecoming victory over Washburn University Saturday (Oct. 2) at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.
The Gorillas (6-0, 4-0 MIAA) built a 43-7 halftime lead against the Ichabods (3-3, 2-2 MIAA), scoring on each of their first six possessions of the first half.
Harlon Hill Trophy hopeful Neal Philpot threw three first-half touchdown passes -- connections of 45 and 26 yards to wide receivers Tim Austin and Mike Ward and a three-yard strike to fullback Tyler Collums.
Race had a 10-yard touchdown run that staked PSU to an 8-0 lead and added a career-long 77-yard second-quarter touchdown scamper that made it a 36-7 advantage for the Gorillas with 5:34 to play in the second quarter.
Backup quarterback Andy Majors added a 38-yard TD run with 11:35 to play in the second quarter to account for the Gorillas first-half points. He added a 39-yard TD pass to tailback Justin Bean and another 38-yard TD run with 4:13 to play in the game.
Race and Philpot, who rushed 14 times for 166 yards, had third-quarter scoring runs -- a 29-yarder by Race and a 6-yarder by Philpot.
The Gorillas rolled up a season-high 538 rushing yards in the game -- the sixth-highest team total in school history.
Pitt State also piled up more than 700 yards of offense for a second straight game after accumulating an MIAA record 809 total yards in a 91-27 win over Missouri-Rolla last Saturday.
Majors, who rushed nine times for a career-high 128 yards, completed six of 12 passes for 91 yards and a TD with one interception. Philpot was 4 of 5 passing for 84 yards with three TDs.
Washburn got an 8-yard TD pass from Jordan Brill to Jeff Scott and a 34-yard TD pass from Dustin Hickel to Cason Lehman for its two scores.
The Ichabods compiled 420 yards of total offense in the game, with 174 yards coming in the final period when the game was out of reach.
Defensive tackle Casey Warlop had seven tackles (two solo) with three TFLs, 2.0 quarterback sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for the Gorillas. PSU registered four quarterback sacks in the game.
