#1 Pitt State Pulls Away for 48-21 Win over Western
St. Joseph, Mo.--Germaine Race rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns and Harlon Hill Trophy candidate Neal Philpot had a hand in three
scores as top-ranked Pittsburg State University pulled away for a 48-21 victory over Missouri Western State College Saturday afternoon (Oct. 23).
The Gorillas improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, while the Griffons dropped to 4-5
overall and 3-4 in the MIAA. PSU led just 21-14 at halftime. MWSC blocked a punt and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown to slice a 21-7 PSU advantage with 1:48 remaining in the second period.
The Gorillas put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive to open the third quarter, with Race capping the drive with a nine-yard run. Philpot, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 224 yards and two TDs, tossed a 19-yard scoring strike to Tim Austin with 38 seconds to play in the thirdperiod. He capped PSU`s scoring with a one-yard run with 3:40 to play. Philpot finished the day with 21 carries for 117 yards and two scores, compiling 341 yards of total offense in the game.
PSU, the top statistical team in rushing and total yards, finished with 343 yards on the ground and 590 total yards in the game.
