PITTSBURG, KS -- Hundred of third graders gatheres at PSU to get their hearts pumping.

Karate. It's ust one of the many activities going on at this year's Kansas Kids Fitness Day.

"These kids love it, they're excited. They're enthusiastic," says Jake Stevenson, Kids Fitness Day volunteer.

More than 800 third graders from 14 schools in Southeast Kansas closed their text books to focus on having some fun in the sun. All while burning some calories.

"With the obesity rate continuing to climb across the nation, i think what we can do here is promote a healthy lifestyle," says event coordinator Shelly Grimes.

Kids Fitness Day gives a students a chance to test their skill at a variety of areas like dance, basketball, and relay races.

Pittsburg State students majoring in physical fitness volunteer their time to make it all possible.

"I just hope that they find it fun to exercise. Go outside and run around, play tag, whatever it takes just enjoy the outdoors," says Stevenson.

This is the first year Stevenson is volunteering at Kids Fitness Day. He didn't know what to expect but says it's been an amazing ride.

"They love to be out here with us. It just makes you feel special. It's a really cool thing," says Stevenson.

All equipment, like jump ropes and basketballs, are donated by the Kansas Governor's Council on Fitness.
