JOPLIN, MO.--- Phones are ringing off the hook for heating repair assistance in Joplin. Ed Smith, the manager of Midway Sheet Metal Incorporated, says as temperatures fluctuate, so does consumer demand.

"It's been so mild so far this year, everything has been fine, except as soon as we lost our 60 degree temperature, we got really busy. You try to take them as they come," states Ed Smith, Midway Sheet Metal Inc Manager.

The winter rush has kept the company and their competitors busy in the last week. Smith says they are receiving 30 to 40 service calls each day.

"Even after hours, if they call us it goes to an answering service, which goes to a text message, which goes to our service man that is on call," states Smith.

The plaza apartment's complex manager says she takes preventative measures, so residents don't face heating emergencies.

"So we do check things. I do a property walk once a week, and I'm looking for things that could turn into bigger problems," states Dana Timm, Plaza  Apartments Property Manager.

Still, heating experts say they understand emergencies are inevitable. Smith says their staff of 15 people have been able to prioritize repairs without much delay.

"Obviously we give the people with no heat priorities, and if they've just got a noisy blower or something, they may just have to wait a day. In most cases, we've been able to handle them pretty much as they call," states Smith.

Proper maintenance can also help avoid a crisis, make sure your filters are changed and cleaned.  Also schedule a routine inspection annually.
