Jasper County's Increased Tax Rolls

JASPER COUNTY, MO.---- Jasper County Assessor Connie Hoover and her staff have been hard at work this past year keeping up with the new homes and businesses added to the tax rolls.
"Between 2011 and 2012 over 10 million dollars in new construction has been added in the county," says Connie Hoover, Jasper County Assessor.
In 2011, 729 new parcels of land were added back into the tax system, that number jumped to 1,252 in 2012. Hoover says the majority of the building is tornado related, and residential properties saw the biggest increase in values.
"The average value of the new homes that are being constructed went from 131,390 in 2011 to 152,500 in 2012," says Hoover.
Higher property assessments also come with the potential for higher taxes. Hoover says each parcel and building is different, so some residents may see their tax bill increase from just a few dollars, to a few hundred dollars. That depends on what has been done to the home.
"For 2013, those homes that were reoccupied in 2012 will be at full value January 1st, 2013," says Hoover.
It is a different story in Newton County. Assessor Jim Otey says property values across the county experienced a small increase, but other factors led to residents paying more at the end of the year.
"Irregardless of whether the assessor ever raised values on the properties if there is a bond issue passed or a levy increase we'll see an increase in tax dollars, and we saw that this year," says Jim Otey, Newton County Assessor.
Workers at the Jasper County Assessors Office says 2013 could be another big year for them. They are already estimating that another 250 newly built homes will be completed this year.
