JOPLIN, MO.--- The Area Agency On Aging and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Joplin is helping collect canned food at area senior centers. Those include the ones in Jasper, Newton, Barton, and McDonald counties. More than 16,000 meals are served a month to home bound seniors. With budget cuts from the state, the group is needing help.

"The Homebound people that deliver their meals are their only contact on a daily basis. They check on their welfare. It's important to stay in their homes. This is valuable to stay in their homes to maintain the service," says Shelly Goerz, RSVP Director.

The canned food drive will go until January 21st.
