LAMAR, MO.--- The Barton County Federated Republican Women's Association held their monthly meeting today. Right now, there are plenty of hot-button issues for them to talk about.
"I decided to have a poll each meeting of something that was going on either nationwide or countywide," states Maxine Rader, Association President.
This poll was one of the activities on today's agenda.
"Do we need guns in schools and what do you think about immigration," says Rader.
Sonia Rozell lives in Lamar and she was one of the members who attended. The poll made her think about her stance on gun control.
"I think that teachers would need to be educated very well, so, that a child doesn't get a hold of it or anything. I do believe that we should be able to carry guns if we want to," states Sonia Rozell, Association Member.
Results of the poll showed there wasn't a real consensus on how the group stood on the issue. Meanwhile, the vice chair of the Barton County Democratic party didn't agree with teachers carrying guns. She thinks security should be a priority.
"One of the things I heard and kind of like, maybe, have policemen or service men, willing to volunteer and just walk around and be there," states Sandra Neira-Hanis, Vice Chair, Democratic Party.
No matter what their stance, the women agree it's vital to have their voices heard.
"I think it's important to stay with the pulse of politics. I think we need to be able to know what's going on. I think we need to be able to give our opinions," says Rader.
The association president says she plans to send the results to one of their congressional field representatives to show them where Barton County stands.
