November 2, 2004 #1 Pitt State Secures Top Seed in Southwest Region INDIANAPOLIS -- Top-ranked Pittsburg State University, fresh off claiming the 2004 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association crown with an unblemised regular season, received the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Region Sunday (Nov. 7) when the 24-team NCAA Division II postseason field was announced by the NCAA. The Gorillas (11-0, 9-0 MIAA), who posted a 21-17 victory over second-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Saturday (Nov. 6) in The Fall Classic at Arrowhead III at Kansas City, Mo., earn a bye and the right to host the winner of a No. 4 versus No. 5 match-up between Colorado School of Mines and Midwestern State University on Nov. 20. Kickoff for the game will be 1 p.m. (CST) at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium, where the Gorillas are 99-5-1 in their last 105 home games. Colorado Mines (11-0), champion of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, will host Lone Star Conference representative Midwestern State University (8-2) on Nov. 13 in Golden, Colo., in the first round of the NCAA-II playoffs. Both schools are making their NCAA-II postseason debuts. Pitt State will make its 14th appearance in the NCAA-II playoffs since the Gorillas joined the NCAA ranks 16 years ago. PSU has a 14-12 record in NCAA-II postseason play, including the 1991 NCAA-II National Championship and National Runner-up finishes in 1992 and 1995. "We`re very pleased to have the opportunity to represent the MIAA as the conference champion and the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Region," said PSU head coach Chuck Broyles, who has compiled a 151-29-2 record in 15 seasons. "Obviously, we`re excited to have earned the right to play at home on Nov. 20. We have a talented regional field, and home field certainly is a big plus."
