PITTSBURG -- Sophomore forward Janelle Klein scored a career high 31 points to lead Pittsburg State University to a 95-71 victory over Missouri Western State College Wednesday (Jan. 19). The Gorillas (12-4, 5-2 MIAA) also got a season-high 22 points from junior guard Megan Ripperton. Senior forward Kami Scrivner added 17 points for PSU, which made 57.1 percent of its shots from the field (36 of 63). Klein, who was named the MIAA Player of the Week Tuesday (Jan. 18), made her first 11 shots from the field against MWSC (12-4, 4-3 MIAA). The Gorillas led 53-35 at the half and stretched their margin to as many as 35 points in the second half -- at 76-41 with 11: 53 to play in the game. The Lady Griffons (12-4, 4-3 MIAA) never got any closer than 19 points down the stretch. Eldra Paixao scored a game-high 24 points for Western, while Selma Barbosa added 20. MWSC made 41.5 percent of their shots (27 of 65) in the game, including a tepid 3 of 16 (.188) from 3-point range. By recording its 12th victory of the season, Pitt State already has equalled its win total of a year ago, when the Gorillas posted a 12-15 overall mark. Pitt State head coach Steve High also notched his 268th career coaching win, pulling him within a game of tying former Missouri Southern and Central Missouri State head coach Scott Ballard as the winningest coach in MIAA history.
