Gorillas get back in win column

Race, Gorillas Rush to 58-7 Victory Over FHSU PITTSBURG -- Junior running back Germaine Race carried the ball 15 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns, fueling 11th-ranked Pittsburg State University to a 58-7 victory over Fort Hays State University Saturday (Sept. 3) at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium. The Gorillas improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory in a game delayed 59 minutes by a brief lightning storm in the Pittsburg area. FHSU dropped to 0-2 on the season. Race scored on runs of 23 and 9 yards to help stake Pitt State to a 31-7 halftime advantage. Senior quarterback Andy Majors added a 20-yard TD run and a 10-yard passing score to sophomore wide receiver Pierce Curran in the first half. Reserve running backs Justin Bean and Caleb Farabi got in on the scoring action in the second half. Bean scored a pair of touchdowns, carrying seven times for 57 yards in the game, while Farabi added an eight-yard TD run. Junior placekicker Nathan Alleman booted three short field goals, including a 21-yarder on the Gorillas first offensive series. The Pitt State offense finished the game with 628 total yards. The Gorillas rushed 53 times for 383 yards in the game. FHSU scored its lone touchdown following a turnover deep in PSU territory. Reed Gottula tossed a 22-yard TD pass to Tyler Manwarren for the Tigers score. The Gorilla defense, which surrendered 430 yards of total offense in a 44-31 loss to ninth-ranked Delta State University in its opener, held FHSU to 183 yards of total offense in the game. The Tigers managed just 71 rushing yards on 34 carries. Senior linebacker Josh Lattimer led the Gorillas with 13 tackles, while senior linebacker Chris Jaax added nine stops, including one of PSUs three quarterback sacks in the game.
