#20 Pitt State Rolls Past Southwest Baptist, 70-38
BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Germaine Race rushed for 170 yards and five touchdowns, sparking 20th-ranked Pittsburg State University to a 70-38 victory over Southwest Baptist University Saturday (Oct. 15).
The Gorillas (6-2, 4-1 MIAA) outscored the Bearcats (2-6, 0-5 MIAA) 35-7 during a pivotal point in the second half to break open the game.
Wide receiver Pierce Curran scored on a 17-yard end around to stake PSU to a 35-21 lead. His touchdown came eight plays after SBU utilized a 51-yard run on a fake punt to pull within seven points of the Gorillas.
Brandon Twito added a 70-yard touchdown pass from Andy Majors, who set school records for passing (358 yards) and total offense (430 yards) in the game, to stretch the margin to 42-21 with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. Twito set a single-game tight end receiving record, catching six passes for 153 yards. His yardage total ranks eighth overall on PSUs single-game receiving chart.
Race helped seal the game with a pair of short touchdown runs. He scored from three yards out to make it a 49-28 game, then capped another drive with a 2-yard run that stretched the margin to 56-28 with 10:51 to play in the game.
Race rushed 17 times for 139 yards and three scores in the first half, as the Gorillas took a 28-14 halftime advantage. He carried the ball seven times for 31 yards in the second half.
Pitt State compiled a season-high 735 yards of total offense in the game -- the third-highest total in school history.
Caleb Farabi rushed six times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. The Gorillas rushed 50 times for 351 yards in the game.
Majors completed 20 of 28 passes with two TDs in the game, climbing to third on Pitt States career passing chart with 4,263 yards. He also moved into second place on the Gorillas career total offense list with 6,205 yards.
Race, who entered the game leading Division II in scoring, matched the schools singe-game scoring mark with 30 points. Hes rushed for 1,221 yards and 25 TDs on the season.
SBU compiled 518 total yards in the game, including 146 yards in its final two drives when the game was out of reach.
