The Angel Tree
JOPLIN, MO.--- Kathleen Garcia can relate to the need around this time of year.
"Growing up, we didn't have a lot, so we struggled. My parents got us clothes and we were allowed one toy," states Kathleen Garcia, Golden Corral Waitress.
The Golden Corral waitress has picked up kids' names from the Angel Tree for the past 3 years as a holiday tradition.
"The very first day when this tree goes up. I come right here and start taking the names. I usually pick a little boy and a little girl," states Garcia.
The Salvation Army has about 2,000 of these tags and most of them are already up at locations across town.
"The need is still out there for this,"states Garcia.
Lieutenant James Curry sees toys as an important piece to Christmas.
"A lot of them will go without and not know the joy of Christmas, the true gift and we want to provide that gift of love to them," states Lieutenant James Curry.
There are more than 10 Angel Trees set up across Joplin and Webb City this year, each is filled with tags listing kids' names.
"All the information is on it. The clothing size and what they want for Christmas," states Lt. Curry.
Lt. Curry says they start seeing the toys really pour in next week.
"A lot of them pickup beforehand so they can get the Black Friday deals which is special," states Lt. Curry.
Garcia has already picked out a boy and girl she will help this year.
"He wants hot wheel cars, the little girl she wanted Barbie dolls and makeup," states Garcia.
She is all about giving this holiday season.
"Get them what's on their list and if I can afford it, a little extra I do," states Garcia.
