PITTSBURG, KS.--- Students from Pittsburg High School, Pittsburg State, and Fort Scott Community College are working with volunteers from Pittsburg Beautiful, to transform a RV park. Once complete, it will become the area's first rest stop and camp ground for cross country bicyclists.
"We saw the need and wanted to fulfill it," says Jim Bush, Founder of Pittsburg Beautiful.
Right now, crews are building a facility that will serve as a shower, restroom, and another that will become a Pavilion.
"The most rewarding part has definitely been seeing the physical project go up," says Adam Shoemaker, Student Project Manager.
"We get to come out here and learn, the city gets a new shelter and people who come to Pittsburg to stay get a nice place to come and relax," says Chris Brixey, Student Project Manager.
The City of Pittsburg has provided the land North of the Four Oaks Golf Course on 20th Street. Pittsburg Beautiful's founder donated $25,000 for material for the project. The students are providing the labor for free, which in turn gives them experience for their future.
"You're doing something that will stand for years to come," says Shoemaker.
Students will finish their work this Friday and campers can start enjoying the park this Spring.
