Walnut Bottoms Cleanup
CARTHAGE, MO.--- This morning, employees with the Carthage Public Works, Parks, and Jasper County Highway Department began cleaning up the area known as "Walnut Bottoms."
The area is about 20 acres and owned in part by the city, while part of it is out of the city limits. Trash has been dumped there through the years and is often thrown off the highway. Today, workers picked up things like tires, furniture, and car parts.

"It's just kind of languished out here and we've not done anything with it. Finally, some of us got together and said, 'we should try to do something with it, make it nicer.' It looks awful," said Alan Bull, Parks and Recreations Director.
City leaders are also looking into purchasing a portion of land that is privately owned.

Once debris has been removed, city leaders want to make a mountain bike trail through the area.
