Carthage River Street Food Pantry Fundraising Needs
CARTHAGE, MO.--- Oscar Reed and his girlfriend have seen the price of food rise. Each week they come to the River Street Food Pantry in Carthage to pick up a food basket and a hot meal. It helps deal with their other living expenses.
"It goes on paying bills. Buying gas to get the boy to school and stuff," says Oscar Reed, Carthage Resident.
Brandy Miller has been volunteering with the pantry for 4 years. She's seen the need grow.
"If you give someone an extra loaf of bread just to see how grateful they are, it really blesses your heart," states Brandy Miller, Assistant Director.
Each Wednesday, volunteers like Miller prepare meals and boxes of food for more than 150 area families. The pantry is hoping to raise $5,000 to receive a matching grant from the Wal-Mart Hunger Program through Ozarks Food Harvest. It would help feed the increasing number of people facing food insecurity.
"We have 10 more days to raise $2,400," says Miller. The director says that money would go a long way. "$10,000 would take us probably into October and we would have money to purchase that food," states Regina Shank, River Street Food Pantry, Director.
It's not just food the pantry provides, but also diapers and hygiene and home products. The grant money would allow them to have other money on hand to help with a much needed expansion.
