New Duquesne Businesses
"We've got a lot of things going on in here. We're real proud they're coming here," states Denny White, Duquesne Mayor.
A Casey's General Store will be rebuilt along 7th and Duquesne and a Hot Rod Grill will be replacing the former Gooches Grill. Along 20th there is more activity.
"Two spec buildings that are going in at 20th and Stephens are going to be for rent," says Mayor White.
Near the roundabout, a former strip mall is rebuilding after being destroyed in the May 2011 tornado.
"Hopefully we can have some new tenants and get the building built back. It'll be a lot nicer than it was before," states Rick Powers, R&P Powers Properties LLC.
Other businesses like Schnelle Sheet Metal and a palette company recently opened their doors in Duquesne. The mayor says even new developments like Casey's and Hot Rod Grill will bring in more revenue.
"These are both sales tax producing vehicles. In Duquesne we don't have a property tax. We rely on sales tax revenue, so it's a big help to us," says White.
The mayor says an increase in sales tax could allow them to move forward on city projects for streets and a possible community center or city park.
