Groundhog's Day

watch video
JOPLIN -- Joplin's official mascot, Boomer, is a little larger than your average ground hog. The one-of-a-kind specimen was on display for a group of kids at Wildcat Glades Saturday. Instructors say groundhogs are a very talented an interesting animal.

"We hear the myth about him seeing his shadow meaning six more weeks of winter, we talk about that, but we also include interesting things about the real groundhog," says education coordinator Chris Pistole.

Boomer's small, yet much more famous brother, Puxhatawney Phil, did not see his shadow Saturday, which legend has it means an early spring.
