Missouri Possible State Sales Tax Increase

watch video
MISSOURI--- Missouri lawmakers are debating whether they should ask voters to consider a hike in state sales tax. House Joint Resolution 23 would add a one cent sales and use tax to benefit transportation projects.

Lawmakers specifically point to the need for interstate construction as well as many smaller projects. Representative Bill Lant says the proposal calls for a 10 year sunset on the tax and local revenue sharing.

"A tenth of a cent would go back to the counties to help them meet their needs. That would be enough money for us to rebuild I-70 and replace some of the bridges," says Representative Bill Lant, Mo, District 159.

The measure must be approved by both lawmakers and voters before it would go into effect.
