Vernon County Senior Center Extra Home Bound Food Delivery
NEVADA, MO.--- Vernon County Senior Center Chef Janet Pike made more meals than usual today to be delivered to home bound clients.
"We've decided not to deliver meals tomorrow so that our drivers will be safe and off the roads," states Janet Pike, Senior Center Chef.
Volunteers with the Vernon County Senior Center deliver more than 100 meals a day to home bound clients, but not today.
"They're are going to be well over 200-225 meals that will go out today for the next couple of days," states Angie Daniels, Care Manager, Center Coordinator.
Ed Oyer was one of the volunteers who gave out extra meals in preparation for the impending storm. The homebound clients rely on getting the food.
"Some of them, that's all they'll be eating that day. They need the meal," states Ed Oyer, Volunteer Driver.
Oyer delivered both today's meal as well as tomorrow's to his clients. One of the clients along his route is Mary Feller.
"That's usually my only meal and the senior center provides that for me on a daily basis," states Mary Feller.
She's glad she won't have to worry about going hungry tomorrow.
"I don't want to them be out. Like I told him, stay safe," states Feller.
Center leaders want to avoid any weather risks as much as possible.
"For most, if we were to deliver on an icy or snowy day, our drivers would be the first to enter their homes and the chance and risk of fall is great," states Daneils.
The care manager hopes to have drivers delivering meals again on Friday. As for now, she expects the senior center to be open for meals tomorrow. In the event conditions are too severe, the head cook will make the decision whether or not to close the center.
