Via Christi Hospital ER Patient Increase

PITTSBURG, KS.--- Via Christi Trauma Coordinator Janelle Dimond has been busy this week. "It seems like when there's an extreme of weather, the emergency departments get busier."

The emergency room has 10 beds ready to help treat patients, and thankfully the people occupying them over past 2 days haven't been seriously injured.

"People going outside, maybe to check their mail, not realizing it's as slick as it is, and they take a tumble," says Dimond.

Registered nurse Bryan Main has seen these types of injuries several times, along with working in the Via Christi Emergency Department, he's also a captain with the Pittsburg Fire Department, and he says there are ways to prevent getting injured on the ice.

"If you do have to be out walking around on the ice, your shoes are very important as far as traction. Be sure you are wearing some shoes that have some traction. You don't want to be wearing slick soled shoes out on the ice," states Bryan Main, Registered Nurse.

Most importantly, Main says you need to have a plan, because they don't want you to have to end up in the E.R.

"If you are a patient waiting to get into an emergency room, a 30 or 45 minute wait is a long time," says Dimond.

A bit of good news, the medical staff says they have not been seeing the high volume of flu patients like they have in the past few weeks.
