Art Feeds Expands to Another Joplin School
"They'll get free therapeutic art and creative education weekly so we're really excited," says Art Feeds founder Meg Bourne.
To surprise the little ones, the group added a bright mural to the school's interior walls.
"Fill this space, make it an even more creative space," says Art Feeds director Brooke Hines.
What's unique about the mural is that each drawing was created by one of the students.
"They gave us 600 drawings," says Hines.
"So we took all those drawings and projected them onto the wall and organized it into a mural," says Bourne.
It's a seemingly small thing that art feeds instructors say can make a big difference.
"That develops their self worth as well to say, 'Something i created is a staple in this school that will be here for years to come,'" says Hines.
Work on the mural started 2 weeks ago and with hard work, it's just about done.
"There's no way we could have done this without our volunteers... There's no way we could have the manpower," says Hines.
About 200 high school kids from across Missouri and Arkansas left their caring mark on the walls while on spring break.
"If someone would have done something like this for our school it would have meant the world for me," says volunteer Ted Castillo.
Being at Cecil Floyd inches Art Feeds closer to their goal of helping all 4,000 Joplin elementary kids.
"Now our total of kids we reach a week is 2, 650 children," says Bourne.
Art feeds is now in 10 of Joplin's 12 schools.
They're goal is to be in all of them by the fall semester.
Art Feeds and Cecil Floyd school leaders are fundraising to have murals painted on the rest of the school walls.
