Joplin Airport Update

Updated: January 7, 2009
If the money is approved, a local airport may soon be getting some much needed improvements. The project stems from safety concerns that developed during the federal aviation administration`s review of the latest mater plan for the airport. The FAAs primary concern is with a lack of space on the runway. The federal government has offered to pay for 1-point-8 million dollars of the 2-million dollar project. The money would go toward modifying the landing thresholds of one runway and an intersection of two others at the Joplin regional airport. The project will require a 10-percent match from the city. David Hertzberg, Joplin public works department says "...it will bring a 1000 ft. Approach so planes can come in at a lower angle." The project will require a 10-percent match from the city. At its last meeting, the Joplin City Council approved paying nearly 130-thousand dollars to the project.
