Updated: January 7, 2009
A high-tech tool is helping to keep emergency officials safe, when responding to a dangerous situation. The device is call the "Photo Ionization Detector" and can detect dangerous gases, such as meth and meth-making materials in the air. Officials say the p-i-d has already become essential in their work. The device was used just last week at 30-30 west 15th street in Joplin, where neighbors reported an odor coming from the home. They used the PID to scan underneath the door before going inside, and detected what was potentially flammable meth-making materials. According to fire department officials, this is the first time a detection by a PID machine has led to a meth bust in the area.
