Officials at St John`s Hospital in Joplin held a ribbon cutting ceremony today for a new palliative care unit.
The new facility will be open to patients in their final stages of life whose disease no longer responds to treatment. The new unit consists of three patient rooms with separate areas for families.
"Palltive care is a concept of end of life care. it`s a focus on treating patterns with agressive comfort rather than trying to care still and that`s our focus,"said Bill Gross of St. John`s Hospital.
Hospital officials say the purpose of the facility is to provide emotional, spiritual and physical support for the families in their times of need. The rooms will be open for patients and their families on Monday.
