Newton County Assault Update

A Newton County man is charged with second-degree assault in connection with a domestic violence incident. Officers say 20-year old Jeffrey Smith allegedly held his 18-year old girlfriend captive while assaulting her at a home in Tipton Ford. Smith fled the home when deputies arrrived, he was later captured in Joplin. Smith is being held in the Newton County jail on $50,000 bond. A court date has yet to be set.
