Some changes have already been made to improve Joplin`s downtown area and more could soon be on the way. City officials have been working to provide more housing in the downtown area, by planning to build loft apartments above downtown businesses. Ron Richards, the Chairman for the Downtown Revitalization Committee, says, "If we use money from the corporation that it is for housing downtown, we think the second story lofts apartments are a great idea. Living upstairs, retail downstairs is a great mix. Everybody in the country is trying to redevelop downtown and we have a unique effort." Officials say they are also in the process of applying to to buy several properties to develop. Just recently, some councilmen have proposed moving Souls Harbor away from downtown Joplin, but officials say there are no plans to do so at this time. They do say they do expect to make some major announcements in the next few weeks concerning the downtown revitalization project.
