Joplin City Council members discuss a possible increase in taxes.
Joplin residents and council members are talking about city and public library district property tax rates.
And at the top of the agenda,a public hearing to discuss a possible increase in property tax.
Mayor Richard Russel says the increase comes after property tax rates were rolled back in the past. The roll back was based on assessements of city property values at the time.
The money raised from the increase would go to fund the Joplin Public Library. Mayor Russel says property taxes are the only means of funding for the library. But what does that mean for area residents?
City Manager Steve Lewis says if approved the most a resident with a 50-thousand dollar house would pay is 94-cents per year and the least would be just 7-cents per year. Mayor Russell says property rates are adjusted annually.
Council members are currently discussing that issue.
