A 73-year old trucking firm with an office in Joplin is going out of business leaving local workers out of a job. Consolidated freightways has filed chapter 11 bankrupcy and has discontinued their operations.
Representatives say there are 19 employees at the Joplin office who will loose their jobs.
That`s part of over 15-thousand employees nationwide who were ordered not to report to work yesterday.
Officials with Consolidated Freight`s competitor CFI say many people are confusing them with the bankrupt company.
But they say although their doors are still open,it`s a dangerous time in the industry for everyone.
"In the last two years there`s been a record number of bankrupcy in our business survival of the fittest. It`s a competitive environment out there. Those who don`t keep their costs in line for whatever reason can`t stay in business and compete will go out of business,"said Herbert Schmidt.
At the Joplin facility guards are refusing anyone access to the property until further notice.
