Newton County Speed Limits

Updated: January 7, 2009
County commissioners in one four state area are working to put the breaks on unsafe roadways. The Newton County Commissioners Office is discussing speed limit issues on county-owned roads. Their main concern is whether lowering speed limits will keep drivers on Newton County Roads safer than they are now. Current speed limits are 60 miles per hour on all Newton County Roads. Jerry Black, Associate Newton County Commissioner, said, "We had discussions several weeks ago, meeting with MODOT, Missouri HWY Patrol, the Sheriff`s Office, and the county engineer to consider adopting a county wide speed limit. It was determined to take it road by road." Black says that Newton County Commissioners will address each road according to community concern. Speed limits on county roads will be determined by the county engineer and the sheriff`s department. A recommendation on a speed limit will then be handed over to the commissioners office.
