Gas Line Break

Updated: January 7, 2009
A construction accident stops traffic near one four state college. The Joplin Fire Department responded to a gas leak this morning near the intersection of Newman and Duquesne roads, just east of Missouri Southern State College. Officials say the gas leak happened when construction workers near the College Heights Christian Church accidentally hit a gas line. Traffic was closed on Newman road just east of Duquesne for about twenty minutes as a safety precaution. Firefighters from the Joplin Fire Department say the wind actually worked for them instead of against them. Captain Tim Woodward said, "The wind is pretty strong today, it helped to dissipate the gas into the atmosphere, natural gas rises in warm atmosphere, so it actually did us a favor." There were no injuries at the scene. After fire officials sealed the break, construction began again. Reported By: Sheradee Scott
